Story
We are scientists that care about species discovery! And we are swimming for The Foundation for the WA Museum!
Our oceans and lands are full of surprises yet to be discovered.
The Foundation for the WA Museum supports this type of activity through the Discovery Endowment Fund. Carrying out fieldwork safely in remote areas is expensive. FWAM helps us do our work well and makes sure we are supported to understand, document and share the amazing biodiversity of Western Australia.
Meet the team:
Paige Maroni - PhD student at UWA/WAM, studying the evolution of Antarctic sea slugs and their relevance to drug discovery. A native of WA, she has participated previously as a team swimmer (2019) and a paddler (2018).
Nik Tatarnic - Curator of Entomology, an expert in true bugs and their behaviour. Canadian by nature, living and surfing in Australia for fifteen years, started distance swimming in the ocean two years ago.
Ana Hara - Technical Officer for Crustacea and Worm collections. A long time diver and swimmer, she has participated in many marine expeditions, and soldiers on through sea sickness!
Paul Doughty - Curator of Herpetology, afficionado of geckos and frogs. A self-confessed “middle-aged yoga warrior”, swimming to Rotto is a bucket-list item he never knew was on his list.
These amazing people are supported by paddler-in-chief Sophie Preston, an experienced Rotto participant; Jenelle Ritchie, second paddler and socials-on-the-spot; Lisa Kirkendale, swimmer-in-waiting, and footsoldier Nerida Wilson.
